Depave Workshops, Events & Volunteering
Depave Chicago held two workshops in Summer 2022, to be followed by an actual depave pilot project (“Workshop #3”). The workshops provided information to participants about all the steps involved in completing a depave project. The workshops are free for everyone and webinar recordings are available by request. We also invite anyone who wants specific training as a crew leader to contact us. Although limited, stipends are available for this special training.

Site selection and equity practices,
Roles and expectations for site hosts and partners,
Funding strategies,
Community-centered design,
Site investigations such as soil testing,

Permitting,
Insurance,
Contractors and volunteers, and
Budgeting projects -

This second workshop dived into:The physical process of depaving,
Event planning and execution,
Excavation and hauling,
Planting events, and
Post-depave monitoring -
Workshop #3
Currently planned for summer 2026:
This workshop includes:
A hands-on depaving experience, where volunteers will be trained and supervised to undertake the depaving of a real project site!
The schedule includes a morning classroom session on removal techniques, use of tools, safety protocols and oversight, and soil testing demo, followed by a full-day of depaving!
Safety equipment (such as eyewear, gloves, sunscreen, etc), breakfast, lunch, beverages, and live music are provided!This workshop will take place at The Montessori School of Englewood in West Englewood.
Depave Volunteer Days
Volunteer opportunities take place during the actual depave days (when we actually remove the pavement ourselves!) and during planting days which take place over the days and weeks that follow a depave event.
